As I have watched Joe Biden’s presidency crumble, I have become more and more convinced that Election Day 2022 will be a good day for Republicans. However, the outcome of yesterday’s recall election in California makes me wonder.
By any objective measure, California is a mess. Illegal immigration has done severe damage to public schools, put pressure on the social services system, and resulted in higher unemployment for low-income American citizens. In addition, business costs have skyrocketed, and housing has become unaffordable in the major metro areas. Consequently, businesses and citizens alike are leaving the state. Added to all of this, Democrat Governor Gavin Newsom crippled the state’s economy with draconian COVID-19 measures that did nothing to minimize sickness and death from the pandemic.
Nevertheless, Newsom scored a huge victory in yesterday’s recall election. It looks like he will end up with about 64% of the vote favoring his retention, which is slightly higher than the percentage he won in the November 2018 General Election. Given what is going on in the Golden State, this is utterly amazing to me.
I did not expect Newsom to be recalled. However, it is shocking that he has apparently not lost any support during his abysmal two and a half years in office. I would have been comfortable with Newsom getting somewhere in the low to mid 50s. That would reflect a 5 to 10 percentage point drop in support. If that were the case nationwide, Democrats would get routed in 2022.
It seems to me there are only three possible conclusions from this outcome: 1) Americans are not fed up with leftist policies that are destroying our major cities, the economy, and our foreign policy; 2) California is an outlier, with over 60% of the population committed to leftism, regardless of outcome; or, 3) This election is an outlier because of the unique dynamics involved in a recall election.
Which of these three is it? I’ll tell you on November 9, 2022.
Have you considered that the people that have recently left CA would have voted for Larry?
I think it's no. 1, regardless of the outcome of the 2022 elections. Not enough Americans are fed up with Leftist policies. If they were, we wouldn't be anywhere near where we are now. Ask a typical voter to tell you exactly what Leftism is, and you probably won't get a good answer. So how can we expect them to be "fed up" with Leftism? They don't even know what it really is or what it's doing to them. This is what happens when you dumb down a society for 50 years. Eventually you get a really dumb society. Before long, they won't even have to steal elections to win.
